From humble beginnings to pivotal roles, this week's Member Spotlight showcases a deep-rooted passion for the industry developed in part from a transformative connection with our association. Meet Justin Taillon, CHTP of Seattle, Washington, who has been a member of HFTP since 2001.
I began working in hospitality when I was 16 years old. After all, someone needs to serve movie patrons popcorn — that was me! I was 25 when I moved into my first full-time finance role with White Lodging at a Hilton-branded property. In all, I have been in hospitality for more than 25 years.
I joined HFTP while an undergraduate student. I was told all freshmen needed to join at least one professional association. At an association fair on campus, I spoke with CMAA, MPI, PCMA, HSMAI and others before choosing HFTP — perhaps because I thought finance was particularly difficult.
It was a career-altering decision. My passion for hospitality has been honed by the numerous mentors I've met at HITEC and Annual Convention. Without HFTP, I honestly don't know where I would be within hospitality today. I've had the opportunity to be a part of multiple councils and committees during my membership, including the HFTP Global Executive Committee, which I currently serve on as 2022-23 treasurer and the incoming 2023-24 vice president.
As a professor, I need to stay abreast of trends. Through HFTP's educational offerings and HITEC, I can stay on top of it and bring many of the teachings from the association into the classroom. HFTP reaches hundreds of students nearly every time I attend an education session because I often can't stop talking about the things I learn at events or webinars!
